Working days between two dates
Count Working Days takes two dates and returns how much working time separates them.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Working calendar | Norway Support |
| From date | {{issue.created.jiraDate}} |
| To date | {{issue.resolutiondate.jiraDate}} |
Two numbers, because there are two questions
This is the part worth reading carefully. People mean different things by "how many working days", and getting the wrong one is how a report ends up off by one.
| Output | Monday to Friday | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Working days | 4 | How many working days do I move from the first to the second? |
| Working days inclusive | 5 | How many working days lie in this range? |
Use Working days for elapsed time — "this ticket took 4 working days". The start date is not counted, because on the day it was raised, no working time had passed yet.
Use Working days inclusive for capacity — "this sprint contains 5 working days". Both ends count, because the team works on both.
There is also Calendar days, the plain difference, for comparison.
Signed, and reversible
Working days is negative when the second date is earlier than the first. That is deliberate, and it makes the number directly reusable: feed it back into Calculate Working Date as the number of working days to add, and you land exactly on your second date.
Working days inclusive is never negative — a range contains what it contains, whichever end you name first.
Identical dates
| Working days | Working days inclusive | |
|---|---|---|
| A Tuesday to the same Tuesday | 0 | 1 |
| A Saturday to the same Saturday | 0 | 0 |
Nothing to move in either case. But a Tuesday is a working day and a Saturday is not, so the range contains one working day in the first case and none in the second.
What it is good for
- Real cycle time. Created to resolved, in working days, without a weekend or a Christmas shutdown inflating the number.
- Escalation on age. A condition on
Working daysgreater than 10 escalates genuinely stale work, not work that sat over a bank holiday weekend. - Honest reporting. Write the number to a custom field on resolution and report on it like any other field.
What it is not
It is not a timesheet and it does not know when anyone was actually working. It counts days your calendar says the team is open. If you need hours, this is the wrong tool.
